You are in my genetic code, my culture, and my values, no matter what. What I am and what I have become, I owe it to you… and to myself. Thank you for showing me the path. Now, like my ancestors who one day escaped, I go my way. Life is an evolving cycle, a spiral. It is just history repeating.

    “Shackle sea song”

Description: This is an excerpt from a longer work concerning a female Hero’s Journey, choreographed by Dunya McPherson. For men, the Hero’s Journey is usually about a boy/young man proving his strength against external odds (monsters, seductions, etc.) For women, however, the Hero’s Journey is more often about an internal oppressor; a young girl must awake from the fantasy of being saved.

Everywoman has to free herself from the shackling of a man’s world. She perseveres. She is strong. She is abundant.

(If performed in duet: ) “She then meets Dervish Woman who guides her onto a path of spiritual discovery.”
